Your class of scientists- A Grouse and ptarmigan citizen science project

Would you like your students to be citizen scientists? The Alaska Depratment of Fish and Game engages classes across Alaska to map grouse and ptarmigan populations. Despite the Willow Ptarmigan being our state bird, little is known about grouse and ptarmigan species. Biologists need your help gathering information on age and gender composition of these birds. Why can't we collect this data ourselves? Alaska is too big and there are too few scientists.

That's where your class comes in! Students gather hunter harvested grouse and ptarmigan wings. Using these samples they work with scientists to determine the age and gender of each bird. In the process, they explore bird ecology, anatomy and physiology, and the cultural importance of game birds. Intrigued? Come learn about grouse and ptarmigan ecology, identify the age and gender of birds using father patterns, and learn to input your data on our citizen science data collection website.

How to make good decisions about Digital Content
It is easy to get distracted by bright shiny objects.  Teachers and leaders often find themselves weighing the pros and cons of different digital content options and getting overwhelmed by the choices. Data-driven decision making is a foundation of personalized learning. From the grouping of students, to strategic assignment of content, to keeping track of each student’s personalized learning paths, data is essential for making decisions.

This session focuses on how teachers can draw on activities occurring outside of the school day as a means of reinforcing standards-based critical literacy skills--such as reading critically, writing, making work public, and responding critically (and with textual and rhetorical support)--in response to ideas and texts with which an author agrees/disagrees.
  • Attendees will draw on multiple sources to examine a current media event that involves civic participation, looking at varied perspectives and how those are represented in several social media spaces.
  • Attendees will review and briefly discuss potential literacy assignments they could use with students that allow them to author a perspective on social media.

How do geese shape the landscape? Integrating research data into classroom climate change studies.
This is a model of how educators and scientists can work together to help students localize global issues of climate change. Within the model classroom activities, students are presented with questions that ask them to think about predicted local impacts to their ecosystem and resources. They are presented with an experiment designed by scientists to help predict future impacts of climate change on bird habitats. Data from the research project is shared with students and they are asked to collect and analyze their own data as well. Students are also encouraged to participate in follow-up citizen based science data collection.
